Recently there has been an explosion of research into the possibility that intestinal microbes (part of our microbiome) can exert important influences on the brain and other organs. Dr. Vander will describe some of the key experiments and conclusions involving these effects on specific diseases, including obesity, autism, and Parkinson’s Disease. He will also discuss what determines the composition of the intestinal microbiome, as well as the mechanisms by which it can alter the function of far-removed organs.
