featuring Russell Stockard

Russell Stockard’s interest in communication brought him to the medium of poetry which he uses both to contain, explore, and express emotion as well as to create community. He has published poems in Dear America: Black Lives Matter.

He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford and directs the Department of Global Studies at Cal Lutheran University.

We are lucky here in Ventura County to have a distinguished group of Black poets and writers open to sharing their work.

Raquel Baker earned a Ph.D. in English Literary Studies from the University of Iowa with a specialty in Postcolonial studies and African literatures in English. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College and a BA in Psychology from San Francisco State University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University, Channel Islands working in the department of English and creative writing. She uses the study of African literature and postcolonial theory to deepen her understanding and writing on the Black experience in the United States.

All readings are free and open to the public.  Readings begin at 7:30pm; zoom opens at 7pm:
